~ A Special Gift ~

Recently we went to the hill country to visit Mister's Mammaw & Pappaw. They have been married for 73 years....no that's not a typo~ they really have been married 73 years. Amazing isn't it? Oh, you should hear the stories they tell....from flower sack britches { true story }to Pappaw's stories about World War II. He was in the Navy...manned many ships through four oceans and served with great men. ALL to come back to the woman he loves...to the country that he loves.

{ aren't they the cutest }

Mammaw said she had something special that she wanted to give Mister. She got up & went to her closet and brought an old cookie tin out. Inside were Pappaw's medals, his VFW hat, a tie, a few odds & ends and his Military bars that he wore on his uniform. The Genius & I cried...Mister got a little choked up, too. He felt so honored to have these cherished items. Now, a piece of history....family history is proudly displayed in our living room.

This is the best kind of treasure....indeed.

EDIT: Mom: I know you're reading this~ We really need a copy of his Navy picture & their wedding photo...while we're @ it. me. :)

How very special! My son made a shadow box of my Grandfather's military things and gave it to him. I know it meant a lot to my Dad to have it, and he has said that when he is gone he wants my son to have it.

You're right, this truly is the best kind of treasure, one given with such love. I'm sure he gave them to your Mister bz he knew that he (and you :)) would cherish them. What a tribute you made by putting them in a place of honor. You and your Mister are the best!!

Hey Sweetie, just wanted to let you know that I will try to find Papaws Navy picture but to my knowledge there are not any wedding photos because they were married on the sly, remember Mamaw said that she kept telling her mom and sisters that she was getting married and they did not believe her, (Papaw even bought her dress and had it waiting for her when she got to the preachers house) then when she returned to her house to get some of her belongings how Aunt Rea started crying and when her mom told her to hush that mamaw would be just fine Aunt Rea said she did not care about that, she was upset because she was going to have to pick the cotton by herself!!!! LOL sorry did not mean to write a book but just wanted to explain why I did not have any wedding photos. Love ya!
